Taken in Monzen-nakacho, Tokyo.
Having lived in Tokyo for nearly 10 years there are still so many places that I've still to visit.
Today the destination was 富岡八幡宮 Tomioka Hachiman-gū shrine in the south-east of the city.
There I saw 3 'o-sumo sans' ('o' in front of a word in Japanese shows respect). They'd stopped by to get their fortunes for the coming year.
I don't usually ask people if I can take their photo but it's not everyday you get a chance to photograph a sumo wrestler. After taking this I said thanks and we shook hands, he had a damn good handshake. In the shot below they were laughing and joking as the man in grey had drawn a fortune with bad luck.... =(
I didn't make any link with this particular shrine and the wrestlers until I was walking around the grounds and saw some large stone carvings of sumo fight scenes. After checking it turns out that the Tomioka Hachiman Shrine is also known as the birthplace of Kanjin-zumō, founded in 1684 and the origin of the modern day professional sumo.
