cdmalin has added a photo to the pool:
The kids wanted to try their first science fair entry, so science is underway at our house. They want to test what additives (or lack of additives) help cut flowers last the longest. We've got a row of 8 tulips in pint glasses (classy) on the kitchen counter. I don't know if I'm more interested in how long the flowers last or in how long we can stand having 8 glasses lined up on the counter.
Shot this with black foam core behind and the inverse square law helping.
Strobist: 430ex in a 28" Apollo softboxat 3 o'clock. white foamcore hand held @ 9 o'clock, angled slightly forward.
Lessons learned: (1) Since the story is the expeiment, not the flowers, I put the focus point on the label. I may have told the story better by (a) smaller aperture to get the front flowers in focus and (b) some angle that allowed the viewer to more clearly see the large number of glasses. (2) I shouldn't hand hold the reflector if I can avoid it, it makes me rush the shots. (3) I really need to consider a tripod for still life shots. (4) Be patient, let the shot reveal itself.
As always, c & c welcome.
