Demonstration after killing of Rabbani, Afghanistan

Village dwellers of Shuhuda district gathered at the demonstration followind the death of Rabbani.

Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan, September 2011.

Burhanuddin Rabbani was President of Afghanistan between 1992 to 1996, after te fall of Soviet Invasion and during Mujaheddin fights for the capital. He had to escape from Kabul when the Taliban took over the city. When the Taleban were ousted from power following operation Enduring Freedom, Rabbani again served as a President, this time onfly from November to December 2001. He was replaced by Hamid Karzai appointed during the Bonn Conference.

After Wiki - Rabbani was the leader of Jamiat-e Islami Afghanistan and one of the earliest founders and movement leaders of the Mujahideen in the late 1970s, right before the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

On 20 September 2011, Rabbani was assassinated by a suicide bomber entering his home in Kabul. The bomb that killed Rabbani was hidden in the turban of the assassin. Just days before he died, Rabbani was trying to persuade Islamic scholars to issue a religious edict banning suicide bombings which happened in the year 2011. The Taliban refused responsibility for the attack, pointing out to the Pakistani's ISI. Those, in turn, blamed the Haqqani network (strongly affiliated with the ISI).

Burhanuddin Rabbani was a very respected figure in Afghanistan. Following the death of "Ustad" Rabbani large manifestations took place across the country. In Badakhshan, his native province, Rabbani family organized a serie of demonstrations basically in every district, in which in total thousands and thousands of people participated demanding truth about his death.
