Taken at Merritt Island Nation Wildlife Refuge, Floriday, May2012. Notice his brother in the upper right background.
What is amazing about Merritt Island Refuge is that it is all (or almost all) NASA property. The runway where the shuttles landed from orbit was only about 3/4 mile to the left of where I took this picture. Standing where I was to take this the Vehicle Assembly Building is visible in the distance when you look to the left. Ok, it's fifty stories tall. It's pretty much visible from anywhere in Titusville, but still, it's funny to think of a wildlife refuge this close to something like Kennedy Space Center.
If you enjoy birding, or any wildlife watching, this is definitely worth a trip. As the military says, It's a target rich environment! Everywhere you look, there are birds. And this wasn't even during the best viewing season there, all the migrant birds had gone home.
