The historic Victorian suburb of Angelino Heights (behind the photographer) is separated from downtown LA by the Hollywood Freeway (101),seen here as it aproaches the junction with 110 - the Pasadena Freeway (N) / Harbor Freeway (S).
The Pasadena Freeway still carries the designation Parkway on the signs. Built in the late 1930s as the Arroyo Seco Parkway to link downtown LA with Pasadena it was the first "freeway" in LA. The 101 Hollywood Freeway, built immediately after the 2nd world war was the next link in the freeway system. [Rayner Banham, 1971, "Los Angeles, the Architecture of the Four Ecologies" pp.87-89]
