We've all seen a "bazillion" images of Mount Rushmore and they all bascially look the same - the shot focused on the four bust sculptures and the waste stone below with very little seen on either side. We're all so used to this iconic perspective that I belive people tend to think that this is all there was - that the faces were carved on one big piece of granite sticking straight into the sky and there really wasn't much else. Now, what struck me upon seeing this national treasure for the first time of my adult life, is how these faces are just a part of a larger mountain ridge. I'm sure there photos showing this perspective are out there somewhere, but I've never seen a shot like this where the sculptures are shown in the broader context . Think it makes for an iconic image that isn't quite as iconic...
