Hands up!

out in the sticks has added a photo to the pool:

Hands up!

Female colour-changing crab spider, Misumena vatia. This is the same individual as in some of my other recent photos, however in this she is freshly moulted. Just a day or so after the previous shots, I came home from work to find a shed skin so I kept her for a few days before setting her free. Spiders are at their most vulnerable when they have just moulted and I wasn't sure how long to leave her for so I kept her for three or four days before taking a few shots and setting her free. Interestingly she was very white pre-moult but came out almost green, possibly because I was keeping her in a container with a load of leaves but no flowers. Often crab spiders do have a tinge of green to them, particularly when they are younger. This one is not a full-grown adult as she was only maybe 4mm in size, possibly due to the appalling spring and early summer weather we have had. Fortunately the sun came out long enough for me to set her free, on some nearby buttercups (in the woods where I have found many crab spiders).
