Peter Denton has added a photo to the pool:
The most intriguing aspect of the churchyard in Moorlinch, Somerset, is this cross, which dates from the 1300s. At first glance, it could perhaps be mistaken for the remains of an unprepossessing chimney – but it’s rather more interesting than that.
What you see here are the 14th century remains of the former churchyard cross, restored in the 19th century – hence the brickwork. The structure is now Grade II listed, and comprises a medieval socket and stump set on a plinth crowned by an old iron cross (a cruciform finial, according to Charles Pooley’s Old Crosses of Somerset, published in 1877).
