Kyre Park Gardens
Kyre Park is a 29 acre Garden and Shrubbery and is now in the middle of restoration. It has five Lakes, Waterfalls, a Grade II listed Tithe Barn, which is more than 350 years old, a Ruin, and Norman Dovecote.
The garden has what is said to be probably the world's largest collection of ferns.
I really loved visiting Kyre Park. Very unusual place and a nice change from the "standard house and gardens" that you seem to get at every National Trust location.
One July Sunday Afternoon we decided to visit Kyre. After following the many 'brown tourist road signs' we reached our destination. Shortly after pulling into the grass car park we quickly reliased that we were the only people visiting today.
At the gates to the park you meet a little honesty box with a recommended small donation. Through the gate you enter into a strange but beautiful garden.
After a short walk over a little wooden bridge your path heads towards the main lake. Beautiful it is too. Here is where I first thought that we were entering into an abandoned theme park. Stood next to the lake is a small but tall fairytale castle with its own turret. At the top of this turret there is just enough room for a small table and 3 chairs. This over looks the large beautiful lake.
To the side of this little castle there sits a grassy banked path which leads you too an entrance of a rather dark tunnel. Bit spooked but curosity got the better of us we headed inside into the dark.
After walking ten metres or so you are led into the centre of the tunnel which becomes much lighter and are greeted with two stone faces perched onto the wall. Unusual, a little creepy, but adds to the charm of the place.
You walk a short distance more and you find yourself at the base of the castle with turret. Part of the lake opposite runs underneath your path which provides an almost moat for the white castle.
Leaving the Castle you can enjoy the rest of the gardens which contains a further 4 more lakes, home to swans, ducks and geece. A couple of waterfalls, folies and many ferns.
After you circle the park you finish at the scene in my above photograph. A beautiful little church also sits inside the perimeter of the park which contains some wonderful stained glass windows.
Definately recommend a visit. Strange, unusual but a welcome change for an afternoon visit. Our visit felt even more weird due to the fact that we never saw a single soul inside the park. The entire park to ourselves. A definate recommendation!!!
