I have been trying to get my head around the concept of luminosity masks for a while. So far I just used to work on my original RAW file with LR and then did some re-touching with PS. The problem I faced sometimes was that I could not recover enough detail from some areas without creating noise or halos. Recently I heard about luminosity masks and found about Tony Kuyper's tutorials and PS actions. I bought them and am doing the tutorials. This is my first try and I'm happy to say that I'm quite pleased with the amount of detail I could recover without damaging the whole image. I still have to understand the whole process much better and refine my technique but I see now why some photographers I follow swear by this technique.
