Harbour Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena)

Harbour Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena)

I was discussing this event, which happened a few years ago, with a fellow naturalist earlier today. This Harbour Porpoise became a bit of a star by swimming up the River Bann to the town of Coleraine and remained for couple of days in the river beside a busy supermarket car park. It was trying to get under a bridge but appeared scared to do so. Hopefully it turned and went back to sea after giving the public a rare chance to see our smallest cetacean species. Harbour Porpoises are commonly seen in the estuary of the Bann, but rarely this far upstream. The nearby Skerries & Causeway Special Area of Conservation is being declared for this wonderful species, so it will be afforded greater protection.
