Roma girl in Dushanbe Tajikistan. She is 9 years old, and is wearing a purple and black dress with a floral design; she also has a hijab (headscarf). She is standing with her back against a tree trunk. Roma (gypsy) people in Central Asia are a subgroup of the Dom people, who likely emigrated from Multan, Pakistan many centuries ago. Locally they are known as Lyulis, Lulis or Jughis, but they prefer the term Mugat (also spelled Mughat). For many Tajiks, Romas are probably the most disliked of all social groups. Although they constitute a tiny percentage of Tajikistan’s population, they are highly visible because they beg. Photo taken on August 15, 2012.
