Finally got my camera serviced by Canon, as it conveniently decided to fail just as we were visiting a jungle in Borneo. The shutter assembly had to be replaced, which is normal wear and tear over the life of the camera. Total cost here in China was 1018CYN, which comes to $161. Not too bad considering that people back home were paying up to $500 for the replacement.
