London 2012: Women's Basketball Preliminary Rounds - 3rd August 2012 20:52
The Basketball Arena represents a ridiculously cavernous venue... which is just a temporary building; it is largely made up of an underlay of scaffolding covered in glorified clingfilm, on top of which sits the seating and court. To cover it a metal shell which is covered by more glorified clingfilm! The capacity of 12,000 was less than Horse Guards Parade... but strangely felt bigger. The building was designed so that it could be dismantled and shipped to other, future Olympic Games; be split into a number of different smaller sports facilities; converted to other uses; or ultimately returned to suppliers or recycled. Very clever thinking.

The first of two games I watched, it was a Women's Team GB vs France... disappointingly we lost but it was a tense and very close end to the game which we ultimately lost in the final 10 seconds! Needless to say, in the overall medal table we beat everyone bar the US and China… definitely Our Greatest Team. Of course the French didn’t like the fact that we dominated the track cycling again; they thought we had “magic wheels” - that’ll be the wheels that are available off-the-shelf from one of France’s leading cycling parts manufacturer! ;) They can however take solace that they beat us at basketball and other sports.

Olympic Set | Large on Black | Hit L for Lightbox.

I must say this was really the first game of basketball that I have ever really watched, it was alright... but seriously who invented a game that lasts for 40 minutes, but which takes 2 hours to complete!?
